Driving Lessons
What do I need to have or do before I can start having lessons? As stated in the Provisional licence section, you must have a provisional licence in your possession in order to start driving. It is a legal requirement, and driving without it could lead to a fine or potentially a ban from driving – even before you have legally started. You also need to have good eyesight. You must be able to read a vehicles registration plate from 20.5 metres away in good daylight. However, the new style registration plates, which were introduced in September 2001, must be read from 20 metres away. If you have to wear glasses or contact lenses, do not panic, just make sure you always wear them when driving. Please see the Eyesight Check page for further details. Where do the lessons take place? The lessons will take place at a location that your instructor believes will be suitable for the lesson. This could be an open car park, back roads or even busy main roads. The lessons are based around your ability and confidence. What is taught in the lessons? The subject taught in each lesson will vary. The driving instructor is a fully qualified professional, and will teach you the key points on different aspects of driving at a pace that suits you. What is a typical lesson like? A typical lesson is simple to understand: Catch-up and review previous lessons, What will be learnt in today’s lessons, Learn, Return to where you began or a pre-arranged drop-off point Review and discuss that lesson. Different lesson topics and lesson times have different structures, but you are always guaranteed to learn something.
